The Airlie Beach Lagoon

Airlie Beach Lagoon (large)

The Airlie Beach Lagoon was officially opened by the Premier of Queensland on 8 January 2001. The experiences on offer are not just a result of the physical facilities but rather a combination of natural and man-made attributes that allow a visitor to enjoy Airlie Beach’s "Beach", with all its security and support.

The Lagoon has become the focal and topical point of the area. When you want to meet someone, you meet "at the Lagoon". If you want to position your accommodation venues, it’s "a few hundred metres from the Lagoon".

If you want a great day of relaxation with no admission fee.... "spend a day at the Lagoon". And the most rewarding thing of all is that the people of The Whitsundays have taken the Lagoon to their heart as much as our tourists and visitors.

SAFETY

The Lagoon was built with safety in mind as much as it was built with our customer’s needs for a relaxing, entertaining, swimming area in mind. Safety takes many forms, and there are many aspects to special needs in the context of a facility with such a wide spread of appeal and usage.

Parents with babes in arms and young children have specific needs, and the Lagoon itself was designed to ensure that families can enjoy the Lagoon experience together.

The shaded areas, paddling pools and gradual graded walk-in access all contribute to ease of use. On a physical need level, the Lagoon is equipped with normal toilet facilities, and also with a nappy nook allowing privacy during changing, feeding etc.The provision of toilet facilities for handicapped people was an automatic part of the design brief for the Lagoon.

People who cannot swim need to be catered for, and this was very much a consideration in the design of the pool, selection of overall depths, access points and similar. Of particular concern was that non-swimmers who used the Lagoon for cooling off would not be at risk, being under the eyes of a lifeguard at all times.

The Whitsunday Shire Council attempts to ensure that the Lagoon experience can be used and enjoyed by everyone.

LAGOON ENVIRONMENT

The lagoon and it's surrounding gardens have been carefully designed to bring out the natural character of the area, while still presenting to world class standards. Whitsunday Shire Council proudly undertakes a comprehensive maintenance program at the lagoon on a regular basis, to ensure it is presented beautifully at all times.
